THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Every year, some movies will unexpectedly turn out to be the crowd pullers in the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The 16th edition of the festival was no different. And the major crowd puller this season was ‘Body (Vucut)’- the movie from Turkey directed by Mustafa Nuri. All the three screenings of the movie held at Kairali, New Theatre and Sree Visakh were jam-packed. Not only for the element of sensuality in the movie, but it was also appreciated as a bold attempt. With the life of porn star at the centre, the film explores the relationship between individual and society within the lines of concepts such as beauty and body. ‘The Painting Lesson’, another competition movie was also well received and attracted a huge crowd to the theatres. There were three screenings for this movie from Chile directed by Pablo Perelman. The film narrates the tale of a child gifted with a talent for painting. However, the cvil war takes a toll on his life and dreams. With the festival authorities arranging advance booking this time, the balcony seats for both ‘Body’ and ‘The Painting Lesson’ were fully reserved two days before the screening.‘The Monk’, from Spain was also another major crowd puller. There were two screenings of the movie. Both the Indian films in the competition section, ‘Delhi in a Day’ directed by Prashanth Nair and ‘At the End of it All’ by Aditi Roy, drew film buffs in large numbers to the theatres.This time also, it was the films in the competition section that turned out to be the highlight of the festival. The cinema halls that screened the Colombian movie - ‘Colours of the Mountain’, Mexican movie ‘A Stone’s Throw Away’ and the African Film ‘The Dreams of Elibidi’ also witnessed heavy rush. All the seven movies included in the Football package turned out to be hot favourites at the Festival. In fact, the package had football worshippers, unusual visitors in film festival venues,making a beeline to the theatres. The Arab Spring package evoked great interest among the audience who were eager to check out the visual representation of the political upheavals. ‘Damascus With Love’ from Syria was one of major highlights of the segment.Under the Indian cinema section, it was Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘NaukaDubi’ that turned to be the major crowd puller. Among the Malayalam films, V K Prakash’s ‘Karmayogi’ and Jayaraj’s ‘Pakarnnattam’ were screened to packed theatres.
