Jammu: In another incident of a soldier turning his weapon on a colleague, a jawan shot dead his superior officer at a forward post in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.

Major Harsh Kumar, hailing from Jaipur and posted with a Rashtriya Rifles unit, was shot dead by a Naik-clerk Ravi Kumar at an isolated post in Thanamandi area on Wednesday night, a defence ministry spokesman said in Jammu.

"The major commanding a unit engaged in counter-insurgency operations had given a dressing down to Kumar following which the jawan shot him dead," a army source said. Kumar has been taken into custody and the authorities have ordered a court of inquiry into the incident.

This is the fifth case of such killings in the army in the last two years and the incident has taken place even as authorities have opened two psychiatric counseling centres in the northern and eastern army commands to deal with stress of personnel.

According to figures tabled in Parliament by the Government, about 91 suicides or cross-shooting cases have taken place in the last five years.

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee had informed Parliament that probe into such incidents had brought out that causes were related to personal, medical or family and leave related problems.
