CHENNAI: A man, who robbed Chennai passengers in an express train, was traced and nabbed at Kolkata on Friday. Police said the robbery case was also registered in Vijayawada and the police from AP will further investigate the case besides interrogating the robber.Railway police said the man befriended one Sudharani, wife of CISF SI VGR Reddy, while travelling in the Howrah Express. The man had reportedly boarded the train in Kolkata while the woman along with her father, sister and a one-year-old baby got in to the train at Vishakapatnam.Sudharani and her family members had seats in different compartments. They were sitting together in coach B1 chatting with the Kolkata man. Later, the woman and her folks picked up their bag to go to coach no B2 as they got seats. The man had also helped them shift. “We suspect that the man injected sedatives in to food packets the woman had brought,” said a police official.Sudharani, her father and sister fell unconscious after they ate the rice they brought, while the baby was awake, as it did not eat. They later found that they were robbed of 17 sovereigns of gold.The woman and her family members got off at the Chennai Central railway station and were received by Sudharani’s CISF sub-inspector husband, and admitted to a private hospital.On the same day, CISF police found an abandoned handbag at the Chennai airport. When they opened it, they found a photocopy of VGR Reddy’s identity card. They contacted the SI over phone and informed him that Sudharani was robbed in the train. Police then checked footage in their surveillance cameras. They identified the man and found that he had taken a flight to Kolkata. Police passed on the information to Kolkata airport officials and the man was nabbed. Police sources said that a complaint of robbery was also registered at Vijayawada.
