In a tragic incident, a 38-year-old man jumped to death from the second floor of a Tiruvannamalai hospital building on Tuesday, soon after he was told he had tested positive for HIV.
A pall of gloom descended over the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital (TGMCH) campus after the 38-year-old daily agricultural labourer landed on his head and died on the spot at around 1.15 pm.
The man had been asked to undergo the HIV test as his wife of 10 years had been taking Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) for more than a year after she had tested positive for HIV.
One of the couple’s four children is also HIV positive and has been taking ART. The couple has two girls and two boys.
When the woman had gone to the hospital recently on a routine visit for her ART, the doctors had asked her to bring her husband along for a test.
On Wednesday, when the test results were revealed, the man, hailing from Pasunkarai village, was visibly shocked, according to police. As soon as his wife left his side to go buy medicines, the 38-year-old rushed to the second floor of the hospital building and took the fatal plunge, said a police officer in Tiruvannamalai Town Station, who is investigating the case.
