BANGALORE: Traders at Russell Market are planning to hold a mango mela on the market premises from May 25. The move is said to be a “fitting reply” to BBMP which is “planning to demolish the structure” and is being worked out to be a “campaign to save the market from demolition.”The traders and BBMP have locked horns over the shifting of market venue and its reconstruction. The traders are using generator sets as the civic body has not issued a no objection certificate (NOC) to BESCOM to provide power supply to the building which was renovated by the traders. They said the mela is being held as they have received more mangoes from neighbouring districts. Also, they have plans to inform the people about their plight and earn some money to clear their debts.“This decision has been taken by all traders to send a strong message to the BBMP that the traders’ community which largely comprises of Muslims, Tigalas and Christians at the market will not bow down to any kind of pressure from any group. We are getting mangoes from different parts of the state for the mela. Earlier, we were getting it from other states too. It is very costly now. We have decided to hold a mango mela from May 25. Through this mela, we will campaign to save the Russell Market from demolition. We want to show BBMP that we will survive in any condition in the market and will not bow down to the political pressure being exerted through BBMP,” General Secretary of Russell Market Traders Association Mohammed Idris Choudhry told Express.
