New Delhi: 'Special 26' is receiving accolades from all quarters for being a well crafted heist film. Manoj Bajpayee plays the character of Waseem Khan in the film, who perceives burglars as his personal enemies. Manoj discloses about what he sees in the script before taking up a role.

Q: 'Rajneeti', 'Gangs of Wasseypur' and now 'Special 26', are you deliberately shifting towards more 'masala' films?

A: I don't think 'Special 26' or for that matter 'Gangs of Wasseypur' falls into the category of formula films, they are not hardcore commercial films but I don't mind doing commercial films either. If the dynamism of the role is agreeable to me then I will do it for sure.

For that matter look at the character of Sardar Khan in 'GoW', it was a character role but in the lead, so be it 'Shool', 'Satya', 'Zubeida', 'Pinjar' or '1971', I am always open to good roles. it doesn't matter whether it's a second role or the third role.

Q: Doesn't the commercial performance of the film affect you?

A: Yes, you just hit the nail at the right place. Since the time I have started my career, the actor within me will move on irrespective of the commercial status of the film. Manoj Bajpayee the actor moved on after 'Rajneeti' or 'Aarakshan' or 'Wasseypur', should I sit at home if my film does well! See, what happened in our industry is that big directors or noted filmmakers start taking notice of you if you're a part of successful films, so it is also about getting the right kind of opportunities.

Q: Apart from one or two films such as 'Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar' and 'Dus Tola' you are not seen in positive roles.

A: I keep getting good guy's roles but sometimes they are not fantastic roles, so it is better to do well written grey shaded roles than doing 'not so valuable' good guy's role.

Q: Sarcasm seemed to be the USP of Waseem Khan in 'Special 26'.

A: Waseem Khan is a great father but likes to stick to the conventions when it comes to his personal life. On the other hand, he is very competitive in his job, and is very sarcastic with his colleagues. His nature becomes visible when he scolds Jimmy Shergill for being cheated. He is a very arrogant fellow who thinks that he is one step ahead of everyone in this world.

Q: Is Wassem Khan really defeated in the climax of the film?

A: Neeraj came up with this idea, we talked about it and then decided that Waseem Khan is a kind of guy who will either laugh out or will commit suicide because he is very arrogant. He laughs out and again gets back to the seriousness of the subject. He is not happy in his personal life as well, his unhappiness gets displayed when he doesn't reply to his son or doesn't say anything to his wife in the end. He has not forgiven himself and is ready to fight the battle all over again.
