London: Artist MF Hussain has recently painted a canvas in reaction to the Mumbai tragedy. The work has become the highlight of an exhibition on Indian contemporary visual arts at London's prestigious Serpentine gallery.
Titled as Rape of India, the canvass is a part of Indian Highway, an ongoing exhibition on Indian contemporary visual arts featuring over 25 Indian artists at the Serpentine gallery in London.
“This is not only an attack on Mumbai but its on India, it's a rape of India. This should change the whole of India. I am very optimistic that the youth will rise and throw the old fogies away,” says MF Husain.
Husain's own association with the Tatas dates back to the early 40s and some of his own works exhibited at the Mumbai's Taj Mahal Hotel. But these were damaged during 26/11's attacks.
Husain in now keen to do a series of paintings for the hotel once it reopens- as his tribute to those who laid down their lives.
”I want to paint a series, about 20-25 paintings the proceeds will go to the victims families,” adds MF Hussain.
Unfortunately Husain's Rape of India won't be showcased in Mumbai. But this exhibition also featuring works of Dayanita Singh and Subodh Gupta, will be traveling to 7 other European cities
“We felt theres a generation of artists to give them exposure this is not a sprint, but a marathon,” says Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery, London, Hans Ulrich Obrist.
The exhibition will travel to 7 other European cities but unfortunately, Husain's collection might never be shown in Mumbai.
