Guwahati: When the new Assam Assembly meets, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will share the space with MLAs who were once dreaded militants. For those MLAs it's quite a transition being part of the very establishment they were waging a war against.

They dropped their guns to serve people. Just four years ago, Boro People's Progressive Front (BPPF) chief Hangrama Mohilary led his group into a secessionist guerilla war against Tarun Gogoi's government in Assam.

Now, the former militant is the main force behind the Congress' return to power. With 12 MLAs, Hangrama Mohilary has emerged as a king maker in the state.

Hangrama Mohilary says, “We are supporting the Congress full heartedly. We are in the coalition and we are not after power in the government. “

The transition has been successful. Former militants are now respected politicians. Some with a significant share of power in the newly formed Congress led coalition government in Assam.

“In our tenure we reached an agreement with the BLT and today they are an elected body there, “ says Gogoi.

From jungle trails to corridors of power, it has not been an easy transition for most of these former militants. They say politics is the art of impossible and these extraordinary MLAs seem to prove that right.
