BHUBANESWAR: Global mining major, Rio Tinto, has joined hands with Intach to renovate and resurrect an old neglected temple in the vicinity of Lingaraj temple here.The Purbeswara temple, to the left of the road leading to Bhubaneswar-Puri road from Lingaraj temple is a Shiva temple dating back to around 100 years. It has remained dilapidated for years.Managing Director of Rio Tinto, India, Nik Senapati on Tuesday announced plans for adoption of the temple. The temple would be renovated by Intach for around Rs 15 lakh that involves reconstruction, restoration, area development, construction of compound wall, repair and replacement of the mandap, kitchen and frontage along with a garden with electricity and water supply.Intach, Bhubaneswar Chapter, has initiated a programme for adoption of neglected temples of Bhubaneswar and sought the involvement of corporates in the endeavour. It had brought out a list of five temples in the city for adoption. The first temple to be adopted was the Taleswara by CESU. The electricity distribution company has committed around ` 5 lakh for the purpose and restoration work has started.Orissa Chapter Convenor AB Tripathy said there were over 3,000 ancient monument and heritage sites that were crying for attention in the State. Intach had already published two documents on lesser known monuments in Bhubaneswar and Puri.He also rued the neglect of Konark temple stating that piecemeal measures were being taken for its restoration and conservation. The Government and the ASI seemed more busy in buck passing than working in a coordinated manner to address the problem areas like water-logging during the rains.Pressing for strong and concrete steps, Intach has suggested constitution of a monitoring body which would oversee the implementation of work in the temple, he said.
