Shanghai: On the final leg of his three-day visit to China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his historic win in 2014 Lok Sabha election while addressing the Indian diaspora in Shanghai.
Modi, who was mocked by his political opponents over his background, said, "No one would have made me prime minister by looking at my bio-data. I thank the people of India for their faith in me. It is the power of common citizens of India that the son of a poor mother, a tea-seller has become the PM. Criticizing me was fine, doubting me was not."
While addressing, Modi once again took a dig at the previous Congress-led UPA government by saying, "Earlier you were ashamed of India but today you are proud of the country."
Making his stance clear that he will work hard for the country, Modi said, "I will not lack in working hard. I have not taken one day leave. I will not rest or take vacations. I had also said I am going to learn whatever good is happening, as a student with an open-mind. No one has accused me of taking a bad decision due to selfish reasons in the past one year."
Wooing them, Modi said, "I have come to seek your blessings that the development path we have taken, be successful. I need your blessings so that I don't make a mistake that causes loss to my country."
Stressing on the importance of India-China ties and thanking Chinese President Xi Jinping for receiving him in Xi'an, Modi said, "The world is seeing this visit very closely. The President of China welcomed another leader at a place outside Beijing. China and India not only can solve their own problems but also help the world free itself from many problems. The welcome was not accorded to me but it was a welcome for 125 crore Indians."
Modi led the BJP-led NDA to a massive win in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections whose results were announced exactly a year ago on May 16. It was after 30 years that any party managed to secure majority in the Lok Sabha with the BJP alone winning 282 seats.
