New Delhi: Chennai-based model Preeti Verma was on Thursday granted police protection by the Madras High Court as she told the court that she feared for her life.
Preeti had lodged a complaint against her parents saying that they were pressurising her to go out with some unknown men. She had tried to leave her house, but her parents had threatened her with dire consequences.
Preeti managed to reach Mumbai with the help of a friend.
According to news agency PTI, Preeti had also alleged that her parents were implicating her close friends in false cases.
She said she had written to the city police on February 11 and that a declaration was also made to the police on March 8 underlining the circumstances under which she left home and stating that she feared for her life.
However, till date the police had not taken any action, while on the other hand the police had been releasing "misleading information" about her to the media from time to time, she contended and sought the intervention of the High Court.
Giving the direction on a petition filed by Preeti, Justice K N Basha also told the police to inquire into a complaint lodged by her against her parents at a city police station.
