HYDERABAD: Two cops, who decided to take a cue from Valentine Day vigilantes and make money while at it, were busted by an alert citizen and handed over to superiors.Constable G Venkateshwar Rao and Home Guard Syed Younusuddin had taken to extorting money from lovers out on a drive in the Gachibowli area.Though Rao was attached with the Sultan Bazar police station while Younusuddin with Charminar traffic police, they crossed their jurisdiction to ‘perform additional duties’ in Cyberabad.“The duo patrolled isolated places in the area on weekends and confronted them couples and threatened to expose their affair,” police said. If their victims questioned their identity, they would flash their IDs and claim they were a part of a “special team” to check illegal activities. “They demanded money from couples and assured that they would not complain,” a police official said. They would snatch their phones and ask them to come to a police station with their parents to collect them. But the two moral cops saw their luck run out on Monday when they came across a young software engineer, Harish of Amberpet, who was out on a drive with his fiancee near IIIT campus at Gachibowli.“Harish stopped his car to buy a water bottle. He was sitting inside the car talking on the phone when the duo confronted him,” Raidurg inspector M Ravichandan Reddy said. As per their act, they started harassing him. As arguments ensued, Harish spotted a roadside sign by Cyberabad police asking the public to call the concerned police officer if they were in trouble.Harish rang up Raidurg inspector and lodged a complaint. “We asked Harish to nab the duo with help of locals and alerted our men who nabbed the duo,” Ravichandran said. The duo were sent to judicial remand.
