KOCHI: The Prisons Department’s decision to shift DySP Abdul Rasheed, a key accused in the Unnithan murder attempt case has kicked up a row. The Department has permitted Abdul Rasheed to be shifted to Poojappura Central prison and he was taken there by road on Tuesday. The CBI officials opined that the Prisons Department should not have considered his request for shifting him to another jail as the case is being considered by the Ernakulam CJM court. “As Rasheed is an accused in remand, he has to be transported from Thiruvananthapuram for the court procedure and this would be difficult for the Prisons Department. “The court had ordered that he must be produced before the court on May 21. Even if there is video conferencing facility, in some cases like that of Rasheed, the court might insist that the person must be physically produced before the court,” CBI official said. However, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Alexander Jacob said that there is no difficulty in transporting Rasheed to Ernakulam as ordered by the court. “The shifting was done on the basis of a request given by Abdul Rasheed that he must shifted to Kollam District Jail. However, that was not approved and we shifted him to Poojappura Central Prison. He requested us to shift him from Ernakulam so that his family can meet him regularly. He also cited medical problems while asking to be shifted”, Alexander Jacob said. Meanwhile, Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court on Tuesday adjourned the bail plea of Abdul Rasheed to May 17.
