Mumbai: Coastal Road Arch Bridge Linking Nariman Point to Bandra To Open Soon For Commuters
The "bow-string" arch bridge is the final link between the Mumbai Coastal Road and Bandra Worli Sea Link

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to partially open one arm of the Mumbai Coastal Road arch bridge this month, connecting it to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). The “bow-string” arch bridge is the final link between the Mumbai Coastal Road and Bandra Worli Sea Link. At present, the coastal road is operational only till Worli.

While the exact date of opening is not clear yet, civic sources said it could be on or before 15 September.

After this bridge is opened, vehicles can travel between Nariman Point and Bandra using the sea link. “One of the two arms of the arch bridge is almost ready for vehicular movement. Therefore, we are anticipating opening it for vehicles around or after September 10. At present, ancillary works like painting the signages and illuminating the structure are ongoing,” a civic official was quoted by Indian Express as saying.

A BMC spokesperson told Hindustan Times that this partial opening marks a “significant milestone” in the ongoing development of the Mumbai Coastal Road.

The officials noted that after opening this bridge, northbound vehicles travelling from Nariman Point can directly enter the Sea Link and exit at Bandra. The entry point for southbound vehicles, however, will remain the same at Worli.

“Vehicles travelling towards north can directly avail the sea-link without exiting from the Worli interchange. Meanwhile, the point of entry for the south-bound vehicles travelling towards Nariman Point remains unchanged from Worli and Haji Ali,” the official further said.

The arch bridges weigh around 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) and have an average length of 140 meters. Currently, the coastal road is operational between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm on weekdays.
