Mumbai: Mumbai Police’s encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma was arrested late on Thursday evening on charges of murder and kidnap of an alleged Chhota Rajan gang member Ramnarain Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya.
Lakhan, was killed in an encounter on November 11, 2006, in Mumbai's Andheri area. Five other people including two constables present during the encounter have also been arrested.
The constables are Ratnakar Kamble and Tanaji Desai while the other three people are Akhil, Hitesh and Shailendra Pandey.
Lakhan's brother Ramprasad Gupta filed a petition alleging Mumbai Police of killing him in a fake encounter.
He said that he had been threatened and told to take the case back many times.
Lakhan was also close to another Rajan aide DK Rao.
Sharma was the Senior Police Inspector posted at DN Nagar Police Station when the encounter took place.
In September 2008 Sharma was sacked from Mumbai Police under Article 311 of the Constitution without any departmental inquiry.
Following his ouster, Sharma approached Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT). In his plea, he stated all allegations against him were false and that officers had acted against him based on ‘grudges’.
On May 7, 2008, MAT ruled in favour of Sharma.
In its order, MAT called the grounds on which Sharma was dismissed as “baseless”, and ordered that he be reinstated.
The tribunal also ordered the state to pay his back wages from the period since his dismissal.
Sharma was yet to be reinstated back in the force by the government.
