Water supply shut down in commercial capital for 24 hours as municipal officials carry out major repair.

Mumbai: India's biggest city is experiencing a dry spell on Wednesday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cut water supply to the city for 24 hours starting from 1000 hrs, IST Wednesday to 1000 hrs, IST Thursday.

Repair work is on in full swing in Mumbai and according to the engineers on site, it is nearing completion. BMC Sub-Engineer Sudhakar Hande said, “Work nearing completion stage. The connection work will be completed. All valves will be repaired today. After valve repairing is completed we will connect the old system to the new one."

The repair work started on Tuesday evening itself. The engineers are cleaning the pipelines and readying to open the valve.

This repair work is carried under the phase one of the project. The engineers are working on to drain the water. They are also ensuring that the water is completely drained out before the new pipeline is installed.

In the second phase, the 220km long new pipeline will be installed. The second work will take place between January 2 to January 5 2007.

According to the engineers the work is going under control and Mumbaikars will get their regular dose of water from Thursday 1000, hrs IST.

However, during the second phase of the work, which will take place in January 2-January 5, the water supply will be cut again. After the second phase the extra level of water promised by the BMC will be delivered.
