BHUBANESWAR: Penury and frequent taunts about unemploymentallegedly drove a 21- year-old youth to kill his mother in a slum here lateon Friday. Tukuna Nayak, the accused, was arrested from the premises of a temple near Kedarpalli slum where the incident occurred.He had a bitter fight with his mother, Shouri, on Friday eveningafter the latter accused him of being not doing anything worthwhile, policesaid. After dinner, when the entire family was asleep, Tukuna allegedlyused a stone to crush his mother’s head and fled the place.The Nayak family was a large one.Tukuna was second among the eight children of Shouri and Hina Nayak,who originally belonged to Fategarh area of Nayagarh district.Hina was working as a sweeper while there was no second hand tosupport him which made their life difficult.The family had recently moved to Bhubaneswar and put up at a relative’shouse in the Kedarpalli slum in Bapuji Nagar under Capital Policelimits. One source said the family was finding it difficult to manage the affairsin Nayagarh and to add to its woes, Tukuna had developed mentalproblems and was advised medication. For about a fortnight, the Nayakfamily had failed to provide him medicines and he was turning aggressive.Unable to cope with the poor financial condition and Tukuna’s erraticbehaviour, the family left him in the village and moved to Bhubaneswar.However, he followed them, and on Friday reached the City where heconfronted his mother. Shouri apparently took him to task for not takingup any work to support the family and asked him to get out. In a fitof anger, he was believed to have killed his mother. Later Capital Policeheld Tukuna from Rajarani Temple premises.Interestingly, during postmortem at Capital Hospital, Shouri’s fatheraccused his son-in-law Hina of killing his wife saying that he was torturingher. The father has put the blame on his son to escape punishment, hesaid.
