New Delhi: Saddam Hussein’s execution may spark a row between Shia’s and Sunni’s across west Asia, fear Muslim community leaders in India. The Muslim community seems to be divided on sectarian lines with Sunnis expressing anger while Shias justifying the hanging calling it "just punishment" for a "criminal" as Saddam.
"Executing Saddam Hussein (a Sunni) just at the time of Eid-ul-Azha is very unfortunate. This has been done only to hurt the Muslim sentiments," Kamal Farooqi, a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board said.
"The execution is just a part of a deeper conspiracy. This has been done to fuel the sectarian violence between Shias and Sunnis not just in Iraq but in entire West Asia," he said.
Noted Shia cleric and vice president of AIMPLB Maulana Kalbe Sadiq justified the execution. “Saddam deserved the punishment for he killed lakhs of
innocent Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, women and children during his barbaric regime," he said.
Meanwhile Zafaryab Jilani—noted lawyer and a member of AIMPLB—said that Saddam was a friend of India and his death will prove disaster for the West Asian countries.
Jilani slammed the Iraqi Shiites saying, "No legal procedure was adopted in conducting Saddam’s trial.” He added that the sentence has been awarded without observing the principles of natural justice prevalent through out the world".
On the contrary, All India Shia Personal Law Board president Mirza Mohammad Athar expressed happiness over the execution and said the deposed President had ruled Iraq with an iron fist for nearly three decades and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people both inside and outside Iraq.
"Saddam deserved nothing less than death," he said, adding "The hanging should be seen as a victory for justice."
Jilani asked the Muslims to guard themselves against what he called the "anti-Islamic designs of the US" and appealed them to maintain calm and tranquility despite this "grave act of provocation" by the US-supported puppet government in Iraq.
