Mysore: Police on Thursday resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to disperse about 1,000 PFI activists, who allegedly pelted stones demanding release of their leaders, leading to injuries to some persons including a senior police officer.
The activists, who were demanding release of their leaders arrested in connection with last week's clashes here, in their "jail bharo" agitation, gathered in huge numbers in Pilot Circle despite prohibitory orders and began pelting stones, police said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mysore city, Suresh, a few constables and a press photographer were injured in the incident.
Even as the situation was limping back to normal following the July 2 clashes which resulted in three deaths and injuries to six persons in Udayagiri suburbs here over the alleged desecration of a madrasa, rapid action force and the city police swung into action as violence broke out this evening.
The police had taken some PFI leaders into custody on charges of inciting group clashes.
Police had also raided their office and reportedly recovered a revolver snatched from an inspector, while controlling the violent crowd in last week's clashes.
