A married woman died by suicide after allegedly facing backlash over her relationship with a man, who — after her — also hanged himself in Mysore’s Hunsur town in Karnataka.

Police said that the 28-year-old woman — with two children — had been close friends with the 22-year-old man and subsequently had entered into a relationship with each other, police said.

The woman recently had put up a picture with the man on her WhatsApp status, leading to tensions between the two families. Both the deceased belonged to two different communities.

Police said that the picture was noticed by their families and acquaintances, adding that, the family members and in-laws of the woman got to know about her alleged affair with the man.

“Following this, she hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her house on Sunday,” a senior police officer said.

Tensions heightened between both the families, which eventually led to an argument. Later on, the woman’s friend, with whom she had an affair, also died by hanging himself from a tree in his neighbourhood, the officer added.

Earlier in December, a man — over suspicion of an extra-marital affair — allegedly killed his wife in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Saturday and surrendered at the police station with a severed head.

In October this year, a couple who had run away from their houses in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, allegedly died by suicide after hanging themselves in a hotel room in Meerut.

Station House Officer, Kankarkheda, Meerut, Ajay Kumar said that no suicide note was found.

Locals had said that the deceased were in love with each other but their families were against their relationship.

In the same month, in another similar incident, a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend ended their lives by suicide in Barabanki after their families refused to allow them to marry.

The couple, who had been in a relationship for five years, consumed a poisonous substance after the woman’s family finalised her marriage to another man in their village.

The young man died while being taken to the hospital, and the woman died during treatment at a local community health centre.

Tikaitnagar SHO Angad Pratap Singh said that the couple belonged to the same community and social class, but their parents were against their relationship.
