New Delhi Rafael Nadal eased through his opening French Open test but the United States suffered a virtual wipeout in the men's section at the Roland Garros.

Nadal won his match against Juan Martin Del Potro 7-5, 6-3, 6-2. But the US, surprisingly, suffered a nightmare first round.

"Really tough, no? Difficult always, the first round, in every play. But especially here, always is especially difficult because the court is very big not the stadium, but the court, it's big and it's difficult. And, well, always the first round is a little bit more pressure because you don't know how well you're playing exactly," Nadal said about his first round match.

Of the nine American players in the men's draw, eight were defeated including third and eight seeds Andy Roddick and James Blake.

Russia's Igor Andreev beat Roddick with ease 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 while eighth-seeded Blake lost to Ivo Karlovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.

In another big upset, Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalezwas defeated by Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

No. 19 Guillermo Canas, who was banned for 15 months doping that ended in September 2006, and No. 29 Filippo Volandri also entered the second round.

Canas won in straight sets against Romania's Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 and Volandri defeated Paul Capdeville of Chile 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

Seventh-ranked Ivan Ljubicic, No. 9 Tommy Robredo, No. 11 Richard Gasquet, No. 14 Lleyton Hewitt and No. 15 David Nalbandian also advanced to the next round.

In the women's section 2004 runner-up Elena Dementieva of Russia beat Angelique Kerber of Germany, 6-3, 6-2. However, another Russian No. 11 Nadia Petrova lost to Kveta Peschke of Germany 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.
