A looming crisis threatens Uttarakhand’s Nainital as Baliyanala, a significant drainage system in the region, poses severe risks, particularly in the lower-lying areas. Recently, the drainage has intensified problems in Aalu Khet and surrounding regions, raising alarms over potential landslides and structural collapses. The situation has exacerbated to the extent that erosion threatens the Virbhatti bridge, crucially linking to the China border, and nearby residential areas.
The concerns extend beyond Aalu Khet, with reports of emerging crises along the Nainital-Haldwani road and upper regions. Local residents have expressed dismay over the efficacy of interventions by the irrigation department, urging swift corrective measures from authorities.
Previously, efforts to curb erosion from Baliyanala in 2017 were rendered ineffective by subsequent natural forces, prompting a renewed government initiative costing 177 crores. Despite initial steps to secure vulnerable areas, apprehensions persist regarding the efficacy of the ongoing second-phase efforts. Residents stress the urgent need for vigilant administration oversight to mitigate future risks effectively.
