'Naqi Ahmed being tortured in custody'
Maharashtra's ATS feels Naqi holds the key to cracking the last year's triple blasts case in Mumbai.

Mumbai: A family member of Naqi Ahmed, who had allegedly helped three terror suspects rent an apartment in Mumbai and was later arrested in a forgery case, said he was being tortured in police custody.

The charge, however, was rubbished by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) which effected the arrest.

"My nephew (Naqi Ahmed) is innocent. He did not know anyone called Bhatkal (Indian Mujahideen suspected member Yasin Bhatkal). We were told he was arrested in a forgery case. We would like to know what he forged," Umar Farooque (52), uncle of Naqi, asked.

"They (ATS officials) are torturing him in the custody. They wanted to make him confess in a case which he was never involved," Farooque told PTI.

Naqi Ahmed, who hails from Darbanga district of Bihar, was arrested on January 10 on charges of forgery and remanded in police custody till January 23.

The ATS feels Naqi holds the key to cracking the last year's triple blasts case in Mumbai.

"Naqi had procured a sim card using forged documents," an ATS official said on condition of anonymity. He refused to reveal further details about his arrest.

Asked about the allegations of Naqi's family, ATS Additional Police Commissioner Sukhvinder Singh said, "The allegations are baseless. We are working as per law."

According to ATS sources, Naqi was the one who helped three terror suspects, allegedly involved in the serial blasts at Zaveri Bazaar, Opera House and Dadar on July 13 last year that claimed 27 lives, get an apartment in Habib building at Byculla.
