BANGALORE: Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday rejected the Centre's contention that he tried to curtail the powers of Lokayukta by appointing a judicial enquiry into allotment and denotification of lands.
In his reply to the Centre's advisory which was issued immediately after rejecting Governor H R Bharadwaj's recommendation for imposition of President's Rule in Karnataka, Yeddyurappa asserted that no effort was made by him to curtail powers of Lokayukta.According to sources, Yeddyurappa had sent a reply to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and said that the cases which were before the Lokayukta prior to the setting up of the enquiry commission would continue to be investigated by the Lokayukta.

Only those cases which were not in the domain of Lokayukta have been handed over to the commission of enquiry. So the question of curtailing Lokayukta's power does not arise at all, Yeddyurappa said.

The BJP high command, to which Yeddyurappa sent a copy of the advisory, perused it and advised the CM to respond, suggesting inputs for the reply, said officials.

'Bandh Was Public Response'

Reacting to the Centre's advisory, which said the BJP was not right in calling for a bandh in protest against the Governor's permission to prosecute the chief minister, Yeddyurappa clarified that it was not the BJP that called the bandh but it was the people who responded spontaneously to the Governor's move.

What's your reaction?
