Mumbai: Even as he adds finishing touches to his Aamir Khan starrer Rang De Basanti, film-maker Rakesh Mehra has decided to release a director's cut of his earlier film Aks.
Dissatisfied with certain portions of the film, Mehra feels Aks could work better if re-edited appropriately.
This Amitabh Bachchan- Manoj Bajpai thriller opened to dismal box-office collections when it was released in 2001.
Inspired by the Hollywood films Face Off and Fallen, Mehra's Aks is centred around a cop who becomes possessed with a criminal's spirit and then turns into a negative character.
Film-maker Rakesh Mehra says, "Being a non-linear film, Aks has a lot of scope for editing. And now that there are no market and time pressures, it is easy to sit back and do a director's cut on it."
In his re-edited version, Mehra intends to drop the religious ideologies that the film had endorsed and adopt a more "practical approach."
The new cut of Aks will be prepared almost entirely on the editing table, and will involve no reshoots.
He will dive into this new project immediately after he's done with Rang De Basanti, which is scheduled for release in January next year.
Mehra says he is confident that his director's cut will be better appreciated.
