New Delhi: An organisation working with Gujarat riots victims is suggesting that riot cases involving petty offences should be disposed of by mutual agreement.

Over 30 per cent of the total 2000-odd riot cases in Gujarat, are petty offences like stone throwing. Jansangharsh manch, which made the recommendation to the state government, says there should be speedy trial of all serious riot cases.

It is working for rehabilitating victims of the communal riots that rocked the state after 59 kar sevaks were burnt alive in the Sabarmati Express at Godhra on February 27, 2002. The organisation is working for the release of those arrested under POTA.

But NGOs are divided over this move. Some say that a lasting compromise can be reached only if justice is ensured.
