Nigeria: Bomber flees, President grills top cop
The Christmas day suspected bomber escaped just hours after police announced that he had been arrested.

Abuja: President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday questioned Nigerian police chief over the embarrassing escape of a suspected bomber behind the Christmas day attack just hours after police announced that they had arrested him.

Sources at the presidential villa in the country's capital of Abuja said the inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim has been given 24 hours to produce the suspect who was arrested at Borno State's governors lodge or face sack.

Kabir Sokoto suspected to be behind the Christmas day bombing that killed more than 40 people in a church in Nigeria escaped from custody of the police prompting Jonathan to query the police chief.

A few hours after the Nigeria police in restive northern Borno state announced that they have caught a suspect in the bombing, the man escaped on his way to his house where they were going to conduct a search.

According to the police, they were swooped on when they were on their way to Abaji in Abuja by a horde of youths who overpowered them and enabled the suspect who was on handcuffs to escape.

The activities of Muslim sect Boko Haram recently has raised fears of religious conflict in the country since the Christmas day bombing near the capital territory.

The sect has been waging a bloody conflict to install an Islamic government and Sharia rule in the country.

A suicide bomb attack by the group at the United Nations headquarters in Abuja in July killed 26 persons.
