New Delhi: Nita Ambani, wife of Mukesh Ambani who heads the country's biggest corporate house Reliance Industries Limited, is the chairperson of Reliance Foundation and has been trying to improve the conditions of villages. Nita Ambani, who has started a project called Bharat India Jodo under the aegis Reliance Foundation, visited Selarpur village in Surat district of Gujarat to help improve the condition of small farmers.
After seeing the success that her campaign has achieved, Nita also joined in the celebrations at Selarpur village and danced with its residents. She mingled with the villagers to know about their lifestyle and even drank and ate with them. She also listened to their problems and also taught counting to the children.
She was given a warm welcome by the villagers after she reached there by walking through the fields and by also using a bullock cart. The farmers told her how they have benefitted from the Reliance Foundation programmes which has helped them in adopting the latest farming techniques. One of the farmers, Jeena Bhai, told her that earlier his income was Rs 5,000 but now it has reached Rs 25,000.
Nita Ambani pointed out that Reliance Foundation's aim was to uplift the poor and small farmers. Reliance Foundation, established in October 2010, has been working for rural development and 250 villages in 10 regions have been selected to implement its schemes. Only those farmers were chosen who had very small land holdings and were not able to produce more than one crop every year. So the programme aimed to improve their condition by using the latest farming techniques and now the work hard is paying rich dividends.
