Kolkata: Non-bailable charges were slapped on a Bengali poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay on Wednesday two days after a college student filed an FIR against him in the Siliguri cyber cell for his controversial poem 'Abhishap'.
The 12-line poem was posted on Facebook on 19th March soon after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took charge and the complainant Arnab Sarkar claimed the poem offended religious sentiments.
The FIR was lodged under section 295(A) of IPC is non-bailable which essentially states that deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious sentiments and section 67 of the IT Act.
Bandyopadhyay, however, stood firmly by the poem he has written after hearing about the FIR filed against him. The complainant is a member of Hindu Samhati, a non-political Hindu rights organisation.
While this is a triumph for the complainant after the police took action, there has been no word from Bandyopadhyay after the non-bailable charges have been slapped on him. He is in the process of consulting his lawyers for the future course of action.
