New Delhi: Delhi government is set to hire over 300 ex servicemen to help enforce the second phase of the odd-even traffic rationing scheme starting April 15, Transport Minister Gopal Rai said on Monday.
"To ensure smooth traffic system, we are going to hire 300 ex-servicemen. The hiring will start from March 28," Rai said at a press conference.
He said the ex-servicemen and civil defence volunteers will be deployed to assist the Traffic Police, enforcement teams of Delhi government's transport department and authorised sub-divisional magistrates.
Rai said a decision on whether to exempt women drivers in the second phase of the scheme as well will be taken only on April 8.
"To exempt women drivers under the scheme or not will be decided later. The final notification on women drivers and timings will come soon. Last time the timing was from 8 am to 8 pm. We are waiting for LG's final notification," he added.
Recently, the Delhi High Court had rejected a plea that sought exemption for women drivers and two-wheelers in the 'odd-even' car rationing scheme, calling it premature.
Giving more details on the second phase, the minister said school buses will be excluded this time, unlike in the first phase which was held during the school holidays.
"Last time private and school buses were pressed in service but this time only private buses will be included. There will be 50% seats reserved for women on buses and metro feeder buses route will be rationalised for better traffic management," said.
Rai said DTC buses will take students to school till 8 am and then ply on the roads till school gets over.
Under the scheme, private cars having odd registration numbers will be allowed to ply on odd dates and those with even numbers on even dates.
Anyone found violating the scheme will have to bear a penalty, which was Rs 2,000 during the first phase.
The road rationing scheme was implemented by the government to contain pollution in the city and its adjoining areas.
