Not long after the Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik launched the Mahaprayan scheme that aims to transfer the bodies of poor people from government hospitals to their homes completely free of cost, a news came in from the state where a man was forced to carry his wife's body wrapped in a blanket with his 12 yrs old daughter by his side for 10 km from the district hospital to his village in Kalahandi.
The man identified as Dana Majhi says district hospital authorities did not give him a vehicle to take his wife's body. "I am carrying the dead body of my wife as I am poor and cannot afford a vehicle, I told the same to the hospital authorities. They said they could not offer any help." said the deceased's husband.
Kalahandi MP Shri Arka Keshari Rao meanwhile has said that the man was inebriated and forcibly took his wife's body out of the hospital. "The enquiry is being done. I have also written for a CBI enquiry. A special team has been deputed for this enquiry to be held" said Rao.
"Odisha govt is giving free of cost cremation money also." added the minister.
On being asked about the negligence, the Kalahandi collector said "I ordered immediate action after the incident came to my notice. I instructed the CDM to arrange an ambulance and have also instructed the Tehsildar and BDO to provide funds to the deceased's husband for cremation" said the collector."
Congress leader Srikant Kumar Jena, however, had something more to say. Slamming the negligence on the part of the government, Jena said, "We cannot imagine this kind of thing happening in 21st century. Unfortunately in the entire tribal area of Odisha the health system has completely collapsed. This kind of behavior of health administration is really shocking. It is a criminal offence, (and) anybody responsible should be booked immediately and CM must apologise."
