The Mil Mi-8, known as the Hip by NATO, is a medium twin-turbine helicopter. It was initially designed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1968. Nowadays, it is manufactured by Russia. Besides its primary function as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 serves various other roles including as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform.

It holds the title of being the world’s most-produced helicopter, utilised by over 50 countries with a staggering number of over 17,000 units. As of 2015, when both the Mi-8 and its counterpart, the Mil Mi-17, are taken into account, these helicopters rank as the third most commonly used military aircraft globally.
