Women teachers and girl students have been directed to wear traditional white burqas due to threats by extremists.

Islamabad: The authorities in Pakistan's Darra Adamkhel town in Kohat frontier region have directed women teachers and girl students to wear white burqas following threats by suspected Islamic extremists.

Political Tehsildar for the Frontier Region of Kohat, Abdul Ghafoor issued the directives during a meeting with head teachers of the girls' schools on Saturday, Dawn quoted officials as saying.

He said female teachers should replace their "fashionable black" burqa with the traditional white burqa.

The meeting was convened to assess the security situation and to work out a policy in the wake of bomb blasts near girls' schools and pamphlets threatening women teachers and students with dire consequences.

The head teachers were directed to ensure that all teachers and girls from primary to high school wear white burqa.

Some officials regretted that on one hand the Central government had announced a coeducation policy in girls' schools, while on the other the political administration in the area had made burqa compulsory.
