Islamabad: The Pakistan government Wednesday approved draft counter-insurgency regulations to provide legal cover to actions against terrorists by the security forces in the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.

The Draft Counter-Insurgency (in aid of Civil Power) Regulations 2011, approved by the federal cabinet during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, will be applicable to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas, an official statement said.

"The cabinet approved the draft regulations, which would provide legal cover to actions against the terrorists. It was observed that it was of paramount importance for the state to curb terrorists' activities and bring the terrorists to justice," the statement said.

The cabinet decided to reconsider and revisit a proposal on the commercial import of non-prohibited bore arms and ammunition in consultation with stakeholders.

It also approved the Delimitation of Constituencies (Amendment) Bill 2011 and ratified the Framework Economic Cooperation Agreement signed between the Pakistan government and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
