Crew members caught a passenger smoking mid-air inside the lavatory on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Pune. Police booked the 38-year-old man after the plane landed at the Pune International Airport on Monday (September 9).
According to the police, the incident took place on an Indigo flight from Delhi to Pune that landed after 1 am. The passenger is a resident of Delhi’s Okhla Vihar, police said.
The flight crew informed the ground staff about the incident soon after the aircraft landed, and the passenger was handed over to the police. An FIR was registered at the Vimantal police station on the basis of a formal complaint by a security executive of IndiGo.
“We have booked the passenger and have issued him a notice to be present before us for the investigation when summoned,” a police officer was quoted by The Indian Express.
The FIR said the flight attendants detected smoke inside a lavatory around 12.30 am, half an hour before the flight was to land. They recovered parts of the cigarette from the dustbin and seized the lighter from the passenger.
A case was registered under Section 25 of The Aircraft Rules, 1937, and Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to acts endangering the life or personal safety of others.
