Pehlu Khan breathed his last in a hospital on Wednesday, four days after being assaulted by cow vigilantes on Alwar highway. Khan was 55 years old. Cow vigilantes had thrashed five people, including Khan, for smuggling cows - a charge that was later proven false. Khan had been admitted in a local hospital with serious injuries.
All those who were beaten by the vigilantes live in Jaisinghpur village, Mewat, Haryana. Khan’s two sons – Arif and Irshad - were with him while he was being thrashed. According to Arif and Irshad, his father and his colleagues were transporting five cows, from an animal fair near Jaipur, in two pickup trucks. One of the trucks belonged to them while the other had been hired from Rajasthan.
One of these trucks was ferrying two cows and their calf while the other truck was carrying three cows and their calves. As soon as the pickup trucks reached Behror on Jaipur highway, half a dozen motorcycle-borne cow vigilantes stopped their pickup trucks. According to Arif and Irshad, after the motorcycle-borne assailants took a close look at their appearances, they started to attack the group of five with belts, batons and hockey sticks.
By the time police reached the spot, the assailants thinking all of their victims dead had fled from the spot. “Police got all the five admitted to the hospital, where today our father passed away.”
Pehlu Khan has eight children out of which six have been married.
Although Rajasthan police has registered a case of murder against the five assailants, whether the police makes any arrests in the case remains to be seen.
The kin of the deceased have been demanding capital punishment for the vigilantes. If the kin of Pehlu Khan is to be believed, all five men of Mewat had proper documents proving their legitimate purchase of the cows.
Despite this the assailants beat the five mercilessly, killing one in process. “All the five should be arrested very soon and should be hung by their necks,” said Arif and Irshad.
