KUMBUM: M Saikumar, Secretary, Public Works Department  (PWD), Government of Tamil Nadu, said that the proposed memorial for British engineer Colonel John Pennycuick, who built the Mullaiperiyar dam, would be completed in six months’ time. He was speaking to reporters at Lower Camp, after inspecting the site, near the Inspection Bungalow of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), where the memorial is slated to come up.The memorial will have a built up area of 2,000 square feet on an area of 2,500 square feet.The construction work, that includes setting up of a park, will be completed in 6 months’ time, he said. Earlier, a team consisting of Saikumar, Theni District Collector K S Palanichamy, Subramanian, Head of the Cauvery Technical Cell, and Rajagopala, Engineering-in-Chief of PWD, inspected the site for the memorial. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced a memorial at a cost of Rs 1 crore for the British Army engineer who headed the Mullaiperiyar project in the 1890s, to irrigate barren lands in south Tamil Nadu districts.
