The Union Cabinet of the newly formed NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the allocation of an additional 3 crore rural and urban households for house construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) during its first meeting on Monday.
During the meeting, the newly-inducted ministers arrived at the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, around 5 pm and participated in the discussions.
This decision came a day after Modi’s third swearing-in ceremony as the Prime Minister of India, held in a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Alongside him, 72 ministers, including 11 from NDA allies, also took their oath of office.
What is the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, implemented since 2015-16, aims to provide assistance to eligible rural and urban households for constructing houses with basic amenities. Over the past decade, a total of 4.21 crore houses have been completed for eligible poor families under various housing schemes.
All houses constructed under PMAY are equipped with basic amenities such as household toilets, LPG connections, electricity connections, and functional household tap connections through convergence with other schemes of the Central Government and State Governments.
In its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pledged to build 30 million new houses under PMAY.
Additionally, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech earlier in February announced the extension of the PM Awas Yojana ahead of the general elections.
“Two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years under the PM Awas Yojana (Gramin) to meet the requirement arising from increase in the number of families,” Sitharaman stated in her speech.
She also highlighted that despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of PMAY-G has persisted, and the government is nearing the target of three crore houses.
