KOCHI: The police are all set to start investigations into the cases involving the circulation of counterfeit money in the city. The fake currency notes showing up occasionally are of Rs 500 and 1000 denominations.Officially, no case has been filed yet. However, banks and shops have come up with the incidents where fake currency notes have been used for transaction. According to the department, no individual has been identified regarding the possession of fake notes.“As of now, no cases or complaints regarding this have been registered in the city . But we have started an investigation on the basis of the information we got from different places,” said M N Ramesh, ACP, special branch.Meanwhile, in the last four years, about 25 cases involving counterfeit currency were registered in the state. In these cases, most of the culprits were from other states. Among the four major seizures that happened in the state during this time, two were from Kochi. The case involved fake notes worth `90 lakh.  In addition, there were small seizures as well. It were the members of migrant population, mainly people from West Bengal and Bangladesh, who were arrested in this connection.According to sources, most of the people who come across fake currency note, destroy it in order to avoid the legal hassles that follow. Already, steps have been taken to sensitise the citizen and also alert banks and other commercial institutions.“We are verifying the incidents that has come to our notice. If we spot any potential incident in this regard, immediate action will be taken,” said Ramesh.
