HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) is advocating celebrating eco-friendly Ganesha Chaturthi through various awareness programmes and workshops to promote clay Ganesh idols and use of environment-friendly colours to protect the water bodies.APPCB has dispatched guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to district collectors and departments concerned for compliance. It will also conduct a workshop on August 24 inviting all Ganesh Utsav Committees in the city to promote use of clay idols and encourage use of natural colours to reduce water pollution.Nearly 150 schools and colleges will be involved in a mass awareness programme being organised on August 28 in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Rangareddy, Medak, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada. The programme will focus on making clay idols. APPCB will set up 30 stalls in conjunction with voluntary organisations to sell clay idols at subsidised rates of `5 for a 9-inch idol across twin cities and Rangareddy district between August 30 and September 1. Also, 150 clay idols, each 5-feet tall will be distributed to all wards in the twin-cities free of cost. To drive home the message, the concept of ‘Paryavarana Ganapathi’ will be implemented at 20 colonies in the city, involving regional APPCB officers. A 12-feet clay idol will also be set up at Ganesh Utsav Committee at Khairatabad.
