KOCHI: The Mahatma Gandhi Residents’ Association has come out strongly against the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities in starting  the construction of the Rail Overbridge (RoB) at Ponnekkara, which received State government nod last year. The railways are to be blamed, the members said. “The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) have already submitted their estimates. However, the railway authorities are yet to do their part in preparing an estimate for the bridge.  Unless the railways sanction their amount which will be required for the development of the bridge, no work can progress,” said the association’s convener Francis K A.According to the residents, the RoB is the need of the hour, especially since the Edappally RoB will start functioning from February. “Once the bridge is opened for the public, the railway gate on the road connecting Ponnekkara to Kalamasssery will be closed. People travelling from here to Ponnekkara, Ponnevazhi, Kunnumpuram will be forced to travel at least five extra kilometre,” he said. Also, the RoB will be an answer to the woes of the public who have to cross at least seven railway tracks to travel from one side of Ponnekkara to the other. An official with the railways said, “We are preparing the estimates. A lot have to be considered.”
