THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poornachandran, the youngster who lost an eye and a hand in a freak explosion when he was aged just six, on Wednesday joined government service as an LD clerk at the Sri Swati Thirunal College of Music, Thycaud, where he studied music.Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb had handed over the Government Order appointing him in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Ministers P J Joseph, K Babu and Anoop Jacob.The plight of Poornachandran - he is S K Poornachand in the official records - was brought to the government’s notice by the Sai Gramam, Thonnackal, which had adopted him after the mishap years ago.Poornachandran, who was born Amavasi to Sreenivasan and Kaliyamma in Kannakurichi, Tamil Nadu, led the life of a ragpicker after the untimely death of his father.Once, in Kallikkandi, Kannur, he picked up a steel canister which exploded. Amavasi lost his right eye and left hand. He was later adopted by the Sai Gramam. It was Communist ideologue P Govinda Pillai who changed his name from Amavasi to Poornachandran. Poornachandran’s music studies began after Playback legend S P Balasubramaniam listened to him recite a prayer at Sai Gramam. On his suggestion, the youngster joined the Sri Swati Thirunal Music College. He has also become a familiar face to television viewers after participating in music contests.
