New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee resumed office on Thursday, five days after he suffered serious injuries in a road accident in West Bengal.

Sporting a cap and wearing whites, Mukherjee with a scar under his left eye went to his South Block office in the evening.

Immediately after returning to his office, he met visiting Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and discussed bilateral relations.

Mukherjee, who suffered head injuries in the accident in Nadia district on Saturday night, was discharged from the Army Research and Referral Hospital on Tuesday.

After taking a day's rest, the 72-year-old minister had resumed work on Wednesday from his home, clearing files and meeting officials and foreign diplomats.

He had also held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon.

Mukherjee said he would be able to hold "substantive discussions" with foreign guests from Saturday.

As he returned to work, the Minister expressed his gratitude to everyone who wished him a speedy recovery and expressed concern over his health.

He also thanked the doctors and staff who attended on him at the Army hospital here besides the local authorities of Nadia district.
