London: Britain's Prince William told his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton that their romance was over—in a mobile phone call, The Mirror newspaper reported on Monday.
Kate had reportedly been hoping for reconciliation even though she and William had agreed at an Easter meeting their four-year affair was on the rocks, said the paper.
A colleague, who saw Middleton take the call in car park at her work in London, said, "It was clear it was William - and definitely a tiff."
Kate paced nervously around a car park as she learned her romance with the Prince, whom she met at university six years ago, was over.
"Kate was walking up and down and looking upset as if she was having an argument. But she didn't cry. Word went round that it was William and they were having problems. Now it's clear what it was all about.
"When she came back to the office she didn't say a thing and disappeared for the rest of the day. She hasn't been back to work since."
The couple had decided they had no future together at a dramatic face-to-face meeting over the Easter holiday, said The Mirror.
Kate discovered there was no going back when she spoke to him on Wednesday. The split, which appeared to come as a complete surprise, was announced on Saturday.
