CUTTACK: Even as the dengue situation continues to be grim in the State, the Orissa High Court on Friday directed the Government to immediately provide staff and doctors for running the special ward at the SCB Medical College and Hospital for the affected people. The SCBMCH has opened a 50-bedded special ward to handle dengue patients but is hamstrung by the lack of adequate number of doctors, paramedics and other staff to man the facility. The hospital has been shouldering the bulk of dengue affected people who are coming from across the state. As many as 211 dengue affected people are undergoing treatment in the hospital now, petitioner and Amicus Curie submitted in his affidavit on Friday. Taking up the hearing on the petition, the division bench comprising Justice BP Das and Justice MM Das also directed the Government to establish Elisa testing facilities at all district headquarter hospitals immediately to ensure prompt diagnosis of the disease among the population. The bench has also sought a compliance report by Health Secretary on the orders issued by it earlier. The Court had directed formation of a high powered committee to monitor the outbreak situation and undertake effective measures to contain the spread of the disease. The efforts of the Government has not yielded results as the disease has spread to 21 districts with more than 402 people testing positive for dengue, Das said. The bench also admitted another petition filed by advocate Sujata Jena on the issue of shouldering responsibility by the industrial units in their respective regions. The Bench directed all industrial units in Angul district and other places to extend all assistance to the Government and the agencies concerned in combating the menace while installing proper medical and treatment facilities in their regions. Jena had alleged that the outbreak was a fallout of rapid industrialisation, increase in floating population, lack of water management and sanitation in the industrial zones.
