BANGALORE: The multitudinous inventory of woes of Jayamahal seems to have finally reached a settlement as one of the busiest roads in the city might soon be pothole-free, which will in turn ease the traffic flow multifold. The road, known to connect Bangalore North to most other parts of the city, was once known for the ‘memorable’ ride it was for  the commuters. However, the reality soon turned into only memories thanks to the problems that ranged from  craters to road widening to uncompleted work by authorities, Jayamahal has borne witness to hassles of all kind. The journey from Cantonment Railway Station to Mehkri Circle, on a rainy day, would take approximately an hour  leaving commuters frustrated. Fiza, a bus commuter, said, “I live in Yelehanka. I need to use this route everyday to commute to college. Traversing this stretch was a messy affair. Sometimes, I would just get off the bus and start walking due to the amount of time it took.”Now, for once, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), quick on its feet, has filled up the potholes, flattened the road and begun work on the widening.City Express had published a report, ‘Once fluttering, now in sorry state of affairs’ on August 15 mentioning the grievances faced by people. The potholes have been filled with jelly to even the road before laying the asphalt coating on the road. Despite being only a temporary measure, the problems on the road have mollified substantially. Prema, a motorist on the road, remarked, “This was one of the roads that had been ignored by the authorities in spite of it requiring urgent attention. It’s good to see that some action is finally being taken.”Stone slabs which was once discarded haphazardly have also been cleared. Also in progress is the construction of drains. With such moves, commuters do not see travelling through the road as a major inconvenience anymore.Sheetal, a commuter, said, “It’s good to see a step such as this taken finally by the authorities concerned. It may be a small one, but it’s a step nonetheless. I hope all our issues related to the road will soon end.”One detrimental concern about the road is the unsystematic way in which the authorities have chosen. The road at several places is still uneven. Slabs from the drains have been left unattended to. Commuters voiced that if a proper method of working was not employed, the efforts that were taken would also go in vain. The chief engineer for the BBMP (major roads department) informed City Express that they were waiting for the right weather in order to finish their work. He said, “Due to the recent rains that the city has been receiving, we have not been able to complete what we started. It will be done soon.”
