MANGALORE/HASSAN: Heavy rains disrupted normal life and train services between Bangalore and Mangalore on Sunday. Heavy rains led to a landslide at Donigal near Sakleshpur on Sunday morning. Railway officials on a warfooting measure cleared the mound and resumed train services in the evening. The incident took place in wee hours of Sunday at about 2.30 am. Alerted by the landslide, Yesvantpur Kannur express (Train No 16517) was stopped at Hassan. As it was Sunday, the train was crowded with devotees planning a visit to Subrahmanya. The railways made alternative arrangements by engaging buses to ply devotees heading to Subrahmanya. Railway officials said there were no changes in the timings of the night train running from Mangalore to Bangalore. Elsewhere, one Chinappa, 45, died when he slipped and fell into a swollen rivulet at Harihara Paltadka in Sullia taluk, police said. In Mangalore, heavy rains coupled with strong winds resulted in the uprooting of trees in Hoige Bazaar, Kulala Bhavan, Babu Gudde, MangaladeviMariggude road. In Babugudde an uprooted tree caused minor damages to a petty shop. There were no loss of lives reported anywhere in and around Mangalore, Fire officials said.
A huge tree crashed on the roof of the back portion of Mangaladevi temple. The damage is being estimated, temple sources said.About four houses in a two kilometer radius around the temple were also damaged.
