BANGALORE: After rounding up 300 people, including 106 children, found begging on the streets of Bangalore, Women and Child Welfare Minister C C Patil said that the State government will take immediate steps to rehabilitate women and children who are into begging. “Rehabilitation means their all-round development — psychological, mental, educational and skill training. I will ensure that the department takes serious note of the menace and initiate steps for their rehabilitation,” Patil addressed reporters here on Saturday. Disclosing that the human trafficking cell of the city police had rounded up 102 children — 66 boys and 42 girls — besides 79 women and six men, Patil said presently they have been housed in the residences of various known people in various parts of city but they will be rehabilitated in government centres. “Till that time the parents come to us and claim their children, they will be with us. While taking their children back, the parents will have to give in writing that they will not allow their wards to go for begging and instead send them to schools. It is only then we will send the children. If not, the state government will take care of them till they are educated and employed,” the minister explained. The human trafficking wing of the city police and officials drawn from the departments of women and child welfare, social welfare, youth services and SHRC conducted surprise raids in about seven zones of city.
