In the wake of the death of four persons in the collapse of a shop at Lansdowne building, tenants of the Devaraja market fearing their safety, have urged the government to take up its renovation under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) programme. Alleging that the corporation’s negligence and delay in renovation of the Lansdowne building was responsible for the tragedy, Devaraja Market Tenants Association
president S Mahadev said that the MCC has done nothing for the safety of heritage markets. They criticised the MCC for spending crores on developing Rajapatha road and social spaces near the clock tower instead of focusing on the renovation of its commercial properties. They urged the government to act against the MCC, the superintendent engineer and engineer in charge of Lansdowne building.
Mahadev also demanded that the government pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
The Dalit Backward Class and Minorities forum has urged the government to pull down the Lansdowne building to construct a new structure. Forum convener Mahalingu regretted the death of four persons and demanded Rs 5 lakh as compensation.
He said that they should also act against tenants leasing out shops for financial gains.
