KOZHIKODE: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the state government to retain the existing Special Investigation Team led by Superintendent of Police C M Pradeepkumar, which probes the larger conspiracy behind the 2003 Marad riot in which nine persons were killed. He added that the government took the decision to transfer the police official leading the team at the behest of the Muslim League, a UDF partner.Speaking at a press conference here on Sunday, Pinarayi alleged that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had ‘torpedoed’ the previous LDF Government’s decision to go in for a CBI probe into the Marad carnage. The UDF government’s move to transfer the police officer to sabotage the system of inquiry is highly deplorable. “State government should correct its action immediately and retain the existing team,” said Pinarayi. CPM cannot reiterate the demand for a CBI probe into the second Marad case, he added. The party had earlier sought a CBI probe into the case, but it was sabotaged due to political interventions. Terrorism was a threat to the nation, but accusing one particular community for it cannot be agreed.Stringent action should be initiated against those indulging in terror activities. On the reported move by the police officials to hack the e-mails of prominent members of the Muslim community, he said police could not have taken such a step without the Chief Minister’s knowledge.“Oommen Chandy should clarify if it was with his consent that the police allegedly drew up a plan to gather e-mail information of various Muslim leaders, as reported by Madhyamam,” he added.
